TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration has announced that it has implemented various mitigation measures to anticipate potential flooding during the Christmas and New Year holidays. These measures include revitalizing drainage channels, reservoirs, and ponds; dredging rivers; reinforcing river dikes; building polder/pump systems; and improving the area's drainage capacity. The city is also preparing logistics and rescue equipment, such as evacuation boats and life jackets.
"We are also ensuring that the pumps are functioning optimally," Jakarta Acting Governor Teguh Setyabudi told Tempo in a written message on Thursday, December 26.
He also confirmed that dredging is being carried out on reservoirs, ponds, and drainage channels. As of December 6, Teguh reported that dredging progress across the five administrative cities has reached 1,026,879 cubic meters.
"A total of 587,107 cubic meters comes from dredging reservoirs, lakes, and ponds. River and stream dredging reached 286,284 cubic meters, and 158,486 cubic meters were for dredging tertiary or connecting drainage channels," he said.
Teguh added that efforts to optimize flood control infrastructure, such as keeping pump houses, sluice gates, heavy equipment, and regular maintenance on standby, are ongoing.
He said that the Jakarta Water Resources Agency currently operates 593 stationary pumps at 202 locations and 557 mobile pumps across Jakarta’s five administrative areas. Mobile pumps are used to reach flood-prone areas and puddles that stationary pumps cannot access.
“Additionally, we have 3,962 personnel (Flood Control and Coastal Management Officers), known as the blue team, on standby in the field as part of the flood mitigation efforts," he said.
