TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta’s modern Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) Plant is set to begin operations as part of the city's waste management efforts. The technology is claimed to be environmentally friendly and able to process up to 2,500 tons of waste per day.
Jakarta Environment Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto, stated that the RDF Plant plays a crucial role in reducing reliance on Final Waste Processing Sites (TPA) by converting waste into alternative fuel.
"This facility is equipped with an advanced odor control system, including a deodorizer using ozonation and UV sterilization technology to neutralize odors like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide through oxidation. Additionally, an activated carbon filter is used to absorb any remaining odor particles," Asep said in an official statement on Thursday, February 13.
He assured that the RDF Plant’s operations have been designed to minimize any impact on surrounding communities, implementing strict emission controls and hygiene procedures to ensure nearby residents’ comfort.
In addition to the deodorizer system, Asep explained that the RDF Plant is also equipped with cyclone and wet scrubber technology to filter air or smoke emissions before they are released into the environment. These technologies, he claimed, ensure that the outgoing air is purified, preventing unpleasant odors and harmful emissions.
The RDF Plant also upholds high environmental standards with its Wastewater Treatment Installation (IPAL), which includes an equalization tank, coagulation and flocculation tanks, sedimentation units, an anaerobic pond, and a sand filtration tank. "This system allows wastewater from operations to be reused for truck washing and plant irrigation around the facility," he explained.
To maintain air quality, Asep noted that the RDF Plant is equipped with a Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Station (SPKU) that provides real-time data on parameters such as PM 2.5, PM 10, CO, NO, ozone, and SO. Additionally, the surrounding area will be regularly cleaned using road sweepers with disinfectant solutions to ensure hygiene. "We have also provided truck-washing facilities to keep vehicles clean before they return to the depot," he added.
Asep emphasized the need for strong collaboration between the government, private sector, and the community to ensure the RDF Plant’s sustainability. "If this model can be successfully implemented on a larger scale, waste management in Indonesia will advance significantly and no longer rely on conventional landfill systems," he concluded.
