TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police are investigating the acid attack on Andrie Yunus, the Deputy Coordinator for External Affairs of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS). Andrie was attacked by an unidentified individual in Jalan Talang, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night, March 12, 2026, around 11:37 PM.
The Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, stated that the Central Jakarta Police are now handling the case. "We are examining witnesses and the crime scene," Budi said on Friday, March 13, 2026.
The police condemned the violence against the human rights activist. They promised to investigate the incident thoroughly. "Hopefully, the perpetrators will be swiftly apprehended," Budi said in a statement received by Tempo.
The Chief of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Central Jakarta Police, Senior Commissioner Roby Heri Saputra, stated that there have been no official reports of the incident. "However, we are conducting an investigation," Roby said separately.
Based on a chronology provided by KontraS, Andrie was riding his two-wheeler on Jalan Salemba I - Talang, Central Jakarta. Subsequently, two perpetrators approached him against the flow of traffic on Jalan Talang, specifically at Talang Bridge, riding a two-wheeler, presumably a 2016-2021 Honda Beat automatic motorcycle.
Suddenly, one of the perpetrators splashed acid towards Andrie, hitting most of his body. Andrie immediately screamed in pain and fell off his motorcycle.
The first suspect was the driver. "He was wearing a white and blue combination t-shirt, jeans, and a black helmet," according to KontraS's observation on Friday, March 13, 2026.
Meanwhile, the second suspect, the pillion rider, appeared to be wearing a face covering or a black 'buff' mask that covered half of their face. They were wearing a dark blue t-shirt and rolled-up blue jeans, made to look short and seemingly made of denim.
As a result of the incident, Andrie suffered serious burns all over his body, especially on his right and left hand, face, chest, and eyes. According to the examination, KontraS found no missing or stolen belongings from the victim, either during or after the incident.
Andrie was immediately taken to the nearest hospital in Jakarta and received emergency medical treatment, especially for the affected area around his eyes. Based on the examination, Andrie suffered burns covering 24 percent of his body.
The incident occurred shortly after Andrie recorded a podcast at the Office of the Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) titled "Remilitarism and Judicial Review in Indonesia," which concluded around 11:00 PM.
KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya urged the police to investigate the incident. "The police are conducting an immediate inquiry to uncover the perpetrator and the motive behind the attack," he said in a written statement.
