TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For 60 minutes, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., on Saturday, June 13, 2026, lights at key landmarks across Jakarta will go dark as part of the Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction Action to commemorate the Environment Day 2026.
The blackout will target several main roads and arteries, including iconic Jakarta landmarks such as the National Monument (Monas), the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Welcome Statue at Bundaran HI, the Pemuda Statue, the General Sudirman Statue, and the Jakarta City Hall complex. The hour-long plunge into darkness symbolizes a collective commitment to the environment and the metropolis's future.
The Jakarta Provincial Government emphasized that the initiative extends far beyond simply flipping a switch, aiming instead to inspire the public to integrate energy-saving habits into their daily routines. City officials believe that small steps taken together can yield a real impact on environmental quality.
The Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, stated that widespread public participation is crucial in efforts to slash carbon emissions and safeguard the city's environmental sustainability.
"Small changes made together can have a massive impact. We invite all citizens to make energy saving a lifestyle choice to ensure a healthier, more livable Jakarta for future generations," Dudi said in a written statement on Friday, June 12, 2026.
He explained that the blackout initiative aligns with Governor's Instruction Number 14 of 2021 regarding the Implementation of Light Switch-Offs for Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction.
Dudi noted that a similar initiative conducted on Saturday, April 25, 2026, successfully conserved 96.91 MWh of electricity, yielding Rp140,226,312 in cost savings. Furthermore, that single hour of darkness prevented approximately 77.53 tons of CO2e from entering the atmosphere.
According to him, these figures prove that simple actions, such as powering down lights and unplugging idle electronic devices, deliver substantial benefits when practiced consistently and collectively.
"Through this simple action, we can help preserve our environment and save energy. If this becomes a shared habit, the long-term rewards will be even greater, paving the way for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Jakarta," Dudi concluded.
