Jamie Carragher has picked out the 'main reason' why Ange Postecoglou lost his job as Nottingham Forest manager at the weekend.

The former Tottenham boss was let go just 19 minutes after full time on the back of his side's 3-0 home defeat by Chelsea, having taken charge of just eight matches but overseeing a dramatic decline.

Controversial Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis left his seat inside the City Ground in the second half with the score 2-0, and wasted no time in wielding the axe on his good friend.

Forest find themselves almost in crisis, sat 18th in the Premier League table after eight games played, with just one win to their name having qualified for Europe last season.

They are on the verge of appointing Sean Dyche to replace Postecoglou as they look to finally settle, with the Australian's reign the second shortest in Premier League history in terms of days - 39.

But Carragher has dissected the downfall of Postecoglou, and picked out one reason why he thinks he his job at the Europa League club.

Jamie Carragher has highlighted the 'main reason' why Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Nottingham Forest

Reece James' goal for Chelsea against Forest at the weekend was the 11th goal the club conceded from set pieces under the Australian

Carragher suggested that the club were recruiting for a new manager in the summer window

'We saw set piece frailties again and that is the main reason why Ange Postecoglou has lost his job,' Carragher said on Sky Sports. 'It's not about being too expansive or full backs in midfield getting caught, it's been about set pieces.

'For Reece James' goal, it was a nine versus four, and they vacated the second six yard box.'

Forest conceded 11 goals from set pieces under Postecoglou, which was more than double any other Premier League side. He endured similar issues at Tottenham, before being sacked there too and taking on the Forest job.

And that could have been the plan all along, according to Carragher. The former Liverpool defender pointed to Forest's summer business and how it wasn't built for former manager Nuno Espirito Santo - particularly in terms of the sale of one player.

'They dropped off last season,' Carragher continued. 'The owner will have been disappointed where they ended up finishing.

'In the summer, bringing Edu in, they wanted a shift in style and you could tell by who they brought in.

'I think Nuno was not happy when they sold [Anthony] Elanga, the quickest player in the Premier League. [Omari] Hutchinson and [James] McAtee play between the lines, they are not flyers.

'But if you are hell bent on sticking with Nuno's style, you don't sell Elanga. When a team has success playing pragmatically, people eventually want to be the team that takes the game to the opposition.
