TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Japanese parliament will hold a vote to select a new prime minister on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. The agreement was reached between the ruling party and the opposition party on Friday, according to a report by Kyodo News cited by Anadolu.

The vote comes after the resignation of Shigeru Ishiba on September 7, following his coalition's defeats in the last two general elections, the Lower House election in October 2024, and the Upper House election in July 2025. These losses have shaken the position of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in parliament.

Japanese Political Coalition

The political situation in Japan has been thrown into turmoil. The new leader of the LDP, Sanae Takaichi, 64, is working to form a government after the Komeito Party withdrew from their long-standing alliance last week, causing the LDP to lose its majority in parliament.

Takaichi, a conservative politician and a close ally of the late Shinzo Abe, has made history as the first woman to lead the LDP. However, her path to becoming Japan's next prime minister is still challenging.

On the other side, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) is trying to gather opposition strength to nominate a prime minister candidate who can rival Takaichi in the upcoming vote.

Negotiations with the Japan Innovation Party

Following Komeito's departure, the LDP began talks with the Japan Innovation Party (JIP) on Thursday. However, JIP leader Hirofumi Yoshimura stated on Friday that his party would not join a coalition with the LDP unless there is a clear agreement to reduce the number of parliament seats by the end of the year.

With 465 seats in the lower house of parliament, the LDP holds 196 seats. To elect a prime minister, a minimum of 233 votes is needed. CDPJ has 148 seats, JIP 35, the Democratic Party for the People (DPP) 27, and Komeito 24 seats.

According to The Japan Times, the chances of LDP President Sanae Takaichi becoming Japan's first female prime minister have increased after progress was made in coalition talks with JIP on Friday, October 17.

Takaichi and one of the JIP leaders, Fumitake Fujita, led the second round of discussions to align the policies of both parties.

"We took a lot of steps forward today. We are at the point of figuring out if we can take just one more step forward together," Fujita said after the meeting.

He added that JIP will soon decide whether to support Takaichi in the upcoming parliamentary vote on Tuesday.
