Justin Fields has revealed that he was left crying on the floor of his closet in the days before he led the Jets to a first win of a miserable season.
The quarterback arrived in New York to replace Aaron Rodgers and lead the team into a new era under head coach Aaron Glenn.
But the Jets lost their first seven games of the season, with owner Woody Johnson blaming Fields for their struggles in an extraordinary outburst.
'It's hard when you have a quarterback with the rating that we've got,' Johnson said. 'If we could just complete a pass, it would look good.'
Fields' position as starter was under threat heading into Sunday's game against the Bengals. But the quarterback led the Jets to a dramatic comeback win in Cincinnati.
And after the game, Fields opened up about the turmoil of the past few weeks, admitting that his emotions eventually came to the boil.
"It's been a lot for me emotionally, spiritually. When I was on the field, I was damn near about to start crying, not because we won but because of the goodness of God."
Fields continues, "I'm going to get pretty vulnerable right here. This week I found myself in my closet… pic.twitter.com/WrmgPUfmOc

'It's been a lot for me emotionally, spiritually,' he said. 'When I was on the field, I was damn near about to start crying, not because we won but because of the goodness of God.
'Everything I've been through this past week, everything that we've been through as a team these past seven weeks. It was a lot of ups and downs and I got a lot of support from my teammates, from my brothers, from my family, from my friends, and most of all I'm just thankful.'
He added: 'I'm going to get pretty vulnerable right here... this week I found myself in my closet crying on the ground, lying down.
'Not because of the hardships, not because of the troubles. I felt like I was built to handle that ... yesterday I was just praying over and over and over again, just one win.'
Fields claimed last week that he did not see Johnson's comments until asked about them the following day. On Sunday, the quarterback insisted the owner's statement was nothing more than 'outside noise'.
'I get that he's the owner of the team, but... the biggest thing was my teammates believing in me and my coaches still believing in me,' he said.
