TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s former president, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, has responded to a statement by the Secretary General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Hasto Kristiyanto. In a video, the politician alluded to scandals by state officials, including that of a request for the presidential tenure to be extended for a third term.
The Indonesian constitution sets that a president and a vice president are elected to a five-year term, once renewable. As such, Indonesia’s 7th president, Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, was ineligible to run for a third term during this year’s presidential election.
The video emerged after the PDIP chief was named as a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
When met by the media crew at his residence in Sumber, Banjarsari District, Solo City, Central Java on Monday, December 30, Jokowi emphasized that he had never asked for his term of office to be extended.
He also asked for the allegation to be clarified with PDIP general chair Megawati Soekarnoputri or PDIP chief Puan Maharani.
“I will repeat this, I have never asked for a third presidential term from anyone,” the former Solo Mayor said, adding that other political parties can be asked for clarification.
“Just ask other [political] parties. When have I ever demanded [for a third term]? Never."
Furthermore, incumbent Vice President Gibran Rakabuming’s father also questioned where and when he ever demanded such things. Jokowi claimed the statement to be “an evil framing.”
Asked whether the allegation was detrimental to him, Jokowi responded casually. “It’s normal,” he said.
PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto emerged after being named a suspect in a bribery case involving Harun Masiku. In a video, he mentioned a nameless figure who intended to perpetuate their power by asking for a third presidential term. Hasto also claimed intimidation to ensure this figure was not fired from his party, PDIP.
