TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, stated his willingness to be elected in the election for the General Chair of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) after a request from the participants of the plenary meeting on Sunday night, December 8, 2024. He asserts himself as the sole candidate for the Chair of the Indonesian Red Cross for the period 2024-2029.
"Yes, all participants have supported me to be elected again as the General Chair. However, formalities (confirmation) will be needed later," said Jusuf Kalla to the media after opening the 22nd National Assembly of the PMI held at the Grand Sahid Jaya, Central Jakarta, on Monday, December 9, 2024. He also emphasizes that there are no other candidates in the election for the General Chair of PMI for the period 2024-2029.
In the Second Plenary Meeting held on Sunday night in Jakarta, the participants decided to accept the accountability report of the General Chair of PMI Jusuf Kalla and unanimously asked him to continue to serve as the General Chair of PMI for the period 2024-2029. The decision for JK to serve again as the General Chair of PMI was announced by the majority of the participants in the National Assembly consisting of officials from PMI at the provincial, district, and city levels throughout Indonesia.
"Out of 490 participants present, representing 34 provincial PMIs and one National Volunteer Forum (Forelnas), gave positive responses to the accountability report of the General Chair of PMI and supported Jusuf Kalla to lead PMI again," said the Chair of the Plenary Session, Adang Rocjana, as quoted from the official statement.
The reason JK was re-elected as the General Chair of PMI, based on the credentials committee report, there were two proposals for accepting candidates for chair, namely Agung Laksono and JK. However, only JK fulfilled the requirements.
"It means Jusuf Kalla is the sole candidate," explained Fachmi Idris, Chair of the 22nd PMI National Assembly Committee.
Support for Agung
In the report during the opening of the National Assembly organization session, Fachmi explained that the support letter for Agung Laksono did not reach 20 percent, while support for JK was more than 50 percent of the eligible delegates in attendance.
"According to PMI regulations, if a potential candidate receives more than 50 percent support, then the candidate can be appointed unanimously as the general chair," he said.
Earlier, Agung Laksono claimed to have the majority support to become the General Chair of PMI for the period 2024-2029 from the PMI regions.
This claim was made by the Chair of the Supervisory Committee of the Indonesian Blood Donor Committee (KDDI) during a declaration of support from PMI regional officials throughout Indonesia at the Menara Peninsula Hotel, West Jakarta, on Saturday afternoon, December 7, 2024.
"Support continues to grow. Until yesterday, there were more than 250 endorsements, exceeding 50 percent," said Agung after the declaration event.
Agung received information that there are 476 National Assembly participants from various regions eligible to attend the PMI National Assembly. These participants will be the voters for the general chair in the assembly held on December 8-10, 2024.
Several regional PMI officials had previously declared their support for Agung as the candidate for the General Chair of PMI Central. The Chair of the PMI in Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu, Hendra Wahyudiansyah read out the declaration.
According to Hendra, Agung has met the requirements to be a candidate for the General Chair of PMI and is the right person to lead the institution.
"The vote mandate that we bring will be given only to Mas Agung in the PMI National Assembly 2024," said Hendra. Hendra also expressed his gratitude to JK who has served as the General Chair of PMI Central for three terms.
Agung has declared his candidacy to run for the position of the General Chair of PMI. He stated his readiness to compete in the PMI National Assembly for the election of a new chair.
"I, Agung Laksono, am ready to run as a candidate for the General Chair of PMI for the term 2024-2029," said Agung in a press conference in Jakarta on Friday, December 6, 2024.
Agung claimed that he has met the requirements as a candidate for the chair set out in the Articles of Association and Bylaws of the PMI. These requirements include having a wide network, experience in organizing, and being respected by the government.
