TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s railway company, KAI, has introduced a new feature in its Access by KAI application that allows women to opt for same-gendered seating arrangements to enhance comfort and safety during their train trips.
Vice President of Public Relations of KAI, Anne Purba, said this feature manifests the company’s care towards its female customers. “With this feature, women can feel more comfortable during the journey. We hope that this innovation can enhance safety and provide a more enjoyable travel experience," Anne said in a written statement on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
KAI’s seating option previously void of an option for women to deliberately choose to sit adjacent to fellow women. The seating feature is introduced to answer the increased needs for women's safety and comfort during a train trip.
In addition to the application, customers who purchase tickets at station counters can also request the staff for seats adjacent to another woman. This innovation is part of KAI's efforts to improve service quality and provide a sense of security for all customers.
KAI's Public Relations Manager for Jakarta operational region, Ixfan Hendriwintoko, said this feature is only available to members of Access who book tickets for women passengers and applies to all intercity trains. The feature will not be displayed for male passengers.
"As a form of commitment to customer comfort, KAI continues to introduce technology-based innovations to enhance a safer and more comfortable travel experience. KAI will also monitor the implementation of this feature and gather feedback from customers for service improvements in the future," Ixfan said.
The Access by KAI application, which has been downloaded more than 7.6 million times with 7.3 million active users in 2024, is considered capable of maintaining customer data privacy in accordance with applicable regulations. KAI also claims to be committed to continuously providing inclusive and responsive services to meet customer needs.
