TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) cyber attack remains a serious threat to various organizations, not only from a technical perspective but also in terms of reputation and business operations. Faced with this risk, Kaspersky has identified some preventive measures to protect organizations from DDoS attacks.
DDoS is a type of cyberattack that works by flooding digital infrastructure like websites or servers with large numbers of requests. The attack is designed to exceed the system's capacity so legitimate users cannot access the services.
To launch the attack, the perpetrators first infiltrate various devices with malware to form a botnet network of infected devices. Once the botnet is ready, the attacker instructs the bot to send requests simultaneously to the target server, causing the service to be unresponsive to normal traffic.
Kaspersky noted that the impact of DDoS attacks should not be taken lightly. Money, time, and the company's reputation are at stake. "Surveys by Kaspersky reveal that one in five DDoS attacks can last for days or even weeks," said Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky, in a written statement on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
He added that this indicates how sophisticated and dangerous the attacks are for all organizations.
Kaspersky provides several recommendations to strengthen cyber defense. Organizations are advised to routinely check system settings covering software, hardware, servers, and networks to identify potential risks. Furthermore, all technology used should always be updated to have the latest security patches.
In addition, it is important to develop strategies for preventing, detecting, and mitigating attacks. Organizations must also ensure that every party involved in the defense plan understands DDoS and their respective roles.
"By understanding the patterns and characteristics of your organization's general traffic, you can establish a basis to more easily identify unusual activities that are early symptoms of a DDoS attack," said Yeo.
He emphasized that in the current political dynamics, the entire industry, not just the critical sectors, needs to prepare. Kaspersky suggests that every organization should have a Plan B and a defensive posture ready to be launched if an attack occurs. "Position yourself to quickly restore critical services in the face of a DDoS attack."
