TEMPO.CO, JakartaNorth Korean leader Kim Jong Un criticized the trilateral military cooperation between the United States, Japan and South Korea for only increasing tensions in the region. Pyongyang also vowed to take countermeasures, including developing nuclear power.

Kim said the deployment of all strategic nuclear assets, war games and military cooperation with Japan and South Korea could create an imbalance in the region and increase major challenges to security

"North Korea does not want tension in the region, but will definitely take preventive measures to ensure military stability in the region," Kim said, as reported by the KCNA news agency, Sunday, February 9, 2025.

Earlier on Friday, February 7, 2025, United States President Donald Trump met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, to discuss relations with North Korea because both countries are worried about Pyongyang's nuclear program. Responding to this, Kim said developing nuclear power is North Korea's unwavering policy.

"The military and people of North Korea will always promote the country's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity in accordance with the spirit of the strategic partnership between North Korea and Russia," Kim said referring to the Ukraine war.

Last month, South Korea expressed suspicion that Pyongyang was preparing to send more troops to Russia. It is estimated that about 11,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to Russia to fight in Ukraine’s three-year-old war.

Earlier on January 12, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) confirmed that Ukraine had captured two wounded North Korean soldiers in Russia, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said they were being interrogated. Kyiv on Saturday offered no direct evidence that the men were North Korean soldiers and could not independently verify their nationalities. But South Korea’s confirmation adds weight to Kyiv’s claim, while neither Russia nor North Korea have commented on the matter.
