Lando Norris will face 'sporting consequences' for the rest of the season following his collision with McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in Singapore a fortnight ago.

Both drivers alluded to the Brit receiving some sort of penalty in cryptic remarks ahead of the US Grand Prix in Austin, where they renew their rivalry for the world championship this weekend.

Piastri, who leads Norris by 22 points with six races remaining, was infuriated by the incident on the third bend of the opening lap, when Norris tagged the back of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and as result banged wheels with him.

Piastri demanded the pair swap places. His plea was rejected.

It technically broke 'Papaya Rules' – the code of conduct run by team principal Andrea Stella, the only essential tenet of which is not to collide with your team-mate.

However, in fairness, Norris did not act deliberately, going for a gap on the inside, and it was not imagined he would face a sanction.

Yet Norris said: 'Things were reviewed and there will be repercussions for me until the end of the season.'

Though McLaren are not disclosing the nature of punishment, an insider indicated that it would be 'sporting' rather than financial.

Norris said: 'If you're clever you'll see what it is.'

He, nonetheless, said he was willing to go along with the edict in the name of future harmony over coming years of rivalry with Piastri. Both drivers are on long-term deals at McLaren.

Peace is fragile, though, as it has been at least since Piastri was ordered to swap places with Norris in the Italian Grand Prix last month.

'The team held me accountable for what happened, which I think is fair,' added Norris. 'And, yeah, then we made progress from there with me understanding what the repercussions were for myself.'
