TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The idea that lemon water aids weight loss is a popular claim often seen on social media. However, experts point out flaws in many of these viral posts.
"Lemon water is hydrating and naturally acidic – qualities that might make you go to the bathroom after drinking it," said diet expert and diabetes educator Caroline Thomason, as quoted by USA TODAY.
Thomason explained that this effect is often mistaken for weight loss. "If you weighed yourself before and after going to the bathroom, sure, you may find that you’ve lost weight. However, it’s not loss from magically drinking lemon water in the morning."
She believes that dieting and exercise are the most effective ways to lose weight.
"As a dietitian, I’m not really sure where this myth originated, but there’s not a magical food or drink that can help you lose body fat," Thomason concluded.
Judy Simon, a clinical diet expert and instructor at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, U.S., told Channel News Asia that drinking hot lemon water as a substitute for higher-calorie drinks, like sweetened coffee, might contribute to weight loss.
However, she added that there is no strong evidence that hot lemon water has a measurable effect on weight or metabolism.
Therefore, the idea that drinking lemon water directly causes weight loss is inaccurate. However, lemon water still offers benefits, including vitamin C and potassium, and it helps to keep the body hydrated.
Research also suggests that drinking water before meals can promote a feeling of fullness, leading to reduced food intake. Experts clarify that there is nothing specific about adding lemon to water that will reduce weight.
If you aim to lose weight, Thomason recommends the following consistent daily practices:
1. Exercise
Incorporate walking and strength training into your routine a few times a week, and aim for 150 minutes of cardio weekly to boost your fitness and endurance.
2. Diet
Focus on protein, increase fruit and vegetable intake, replace refined grains with whole grains, and include healthy fats in your diet.
3. Check your daily calorie intake
Some experts worry this approach could lead to eating disorders. However, Thomason highlights its potential benefits, as it helps establish a foundation for mindful eating habits and identifies necessary adjustments for effective weight loss.
Furthermore, it should be noted that acidic drinks like lemon water can cause heartburn, especially for those prone to acid reflux.
