
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Liverpool has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of striker Diogo Jota. The 28-year-old Portuguese international died in a car accident in Spain alongside his brother, Andre.
The English Premier League club confirmed it had received news of the incident.
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," read the statement, as quoted by Goal.com.
"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss,” read a statement on the club’s official website on Thursday, July 3, 2025
“We will continue to provide them with our full support,' the statement concluded.
Jota and his brother reportedly died in a car crash that took place early Thursday morning local time, at kilometer 65 on the A-52 highway in Zamora Province, near Sanabria.
Spain’s Civil Guard, the national law enforcement agency, is investigating the cause of the accident. According to a report by ESPN, authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved.
Both Jota and his brother were found dead at the scene after their car veered off the road and caught fire in the western part of the country.
The crash occurred just 11 days after Jota married his partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he has three children.
Since joining Liverpool from Wolverhampton in 2020, Jota played in 182 matches. He helped the team win the Premier League title in May 2025, adding to his earlier achievements of one FA Cup and two Carabao Cup trophies during his time at Anfield.
Jota also had an impressive run with the Portuguese national team, earning 49 caps and scoring 14 goals. He was part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025.
