Yogyakarta Extreme Weather Extends to October, Tourists Alerted

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Heavy rainfall is expected to persist into October in Yogyakarta. Tourists planning their vacation in the region are advised to remain cautious not only when visiting natural destinations, but also when they are in urban areas.

The Yogyakarta City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said urban areas in the special Indonesian region are not exempt from hydro-meteorological disasters. This week, they issued Circular Letter Number 100.3.4.4/1155 on extreme weather preparedness during the transitional period from the dry season to the rainy season around September-October 2025.

"Heavy rainfall has occurred since last August, causing several incidents including collapsed houses, fallen trees, and puddles in several locations," said the Head of Yogyakarta City BPBD, Nur Hidayat, on Thursday, September 18, 2025.

Yogyakarta City BPBD has expanded the number of disaster-prone areas spread across almost all sub-districts in the city with varying levels of risk. For example, floods and puddles are prone to occur in the floodplain areas of the Code River, which crosses the Gondokusuman, Jetis, and Gedongtengen Sub-districts.

Then, the floodplain area of the Winongo River, which crosses the Tegalrejo, Ngampilan, and Mantrijeron Sub-districts, as well as the floodplain of the Gajahwong River, dividing the Umbulharjo and Kotagede Sub-districts.

Landslide risks are also present at several cliffsides in the Kotagede, Umbulharjo, and Keraton Sub-districts, while fallen trees are expected on major roads with an abundance of big trees, such as Kusumanegara Street, Wahid Hasyim Street, Kyai Mojo Street, and their surrounding areas.

Nur Hidayat said the Yogyakarta City currently recorded 169 disaster-resilient villages (Kampung Tangguh Bencana, KTB). The residents in these villages have been equipped with disaster management skills, threat mitigation, and evacuation route simulations for facing disasters.

A total of 26 active Early Warning System (EWS) units are also scattered along major rivers, starting from the Code, Winongo, and Gajahwong Rivers. These devices will promptly inform when the rivers' discharge and volume increase. "The feasibility of other equipment such as sensors, evacuation tools, and supporting facilities in these villages is also monitored regularly," he said.

Nur mentioned that they have also improved drainage and embankments at landslide-prone points, by cleaning water channels and gutters. Meanwhile, the Environmental Office has been actively pruning large trees in the city's major roads to minimize the risk of falling trees.

The Head of Yogyakarta BMKG Meteorological Station, Warjono, said parts of Yogyakarta are expecting light to moderate intensity rainfall over the upcoming weekend. "Particularly in the northern part of Sleman Regency, the northern-central part of Kulon Progo, and the northern-central part of Gunungkidul," he said.

But the weather agency does not rule out the possibility of widespread rainfall across Yogyakarta due to recent atmospheric dynamics analysis, where several factors support the rise in water vapor supply to the atmosphere, which promotes the raincloud growth in Yogyakarta.

"The current air humidity profile in the Yogyakarta region is relatively high, contributing to the potential formation of rain clouds in the northern part of Yogyakarta, especially during the daytime until late afternoon," he said.
