Liverpool suffer huge injury blow to compound misery as summer signing limps off against PSV

To compound Liverpool's misery, Hugo Ekitike limped off against PSV on Wednesday night. 

With his side 2-1 down, the £79million summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt slapped the Anfield turf in frustration after it became clear he would have to come off. 

The Frenchman had been involved in a tussle for the ball on a Liverpool counter attack but there did not appear to be any great contact. 

Arne Slot will fear Ekitike has gone down with a muscle injury and could be side-lined for a considerable amount of time. 

There was no chance of the striker playing on as he immediately signalled to the substitutes bench. 

Alexander Isak came on to replace him but Ekitike had been one of the bright sparks in the Liverpool team during another strange performance. 

By the time Ekitike came off, PSV were 2-1 up at Anfield despite having dominated the game for large periods. 

In a similar pattern to recent defeats, the Reds found defensive lapses costing them, with Virgil van Dijk giving an extraordinary penalty away with an early handball.

The hosts soon equalised through Dominic Szoboszlai, who tapped in following a Cody Gakpo shot parried into his path. 

And despite dominating the rest of the first 45 minutes, they found themselves behind in the second half. 

Mauro Junior played a defence-splitting pass to pick out the run of Guus Til, who finished with aplomb. 

Regardless of the outcome, Slot has a huge amount to ponder and will be waiting nervously about the severity of Ekitike's injury.
