TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Global academic excellence continues to evolve, with institutions striving not only for prestige but also for subject-specific distinction. The 16th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject offers a comprehensive snapshot of performance across disciplines worldwide.

This year’s evaluation spans more than 21,000 academic programs from approximately 1,900 institutions across 100 countries. Covering 55 individual subjects, the rankings are organized into five broad faculty areas, providing a structured view of higher education strengths.

Arts and Humanities

Linguistics emerges as the most improved subject this year, highlighting notable progress within the Arts and Humanities field. The rankings further incorporate over 490 newly represented subjects, reflecting an expanding global engagement among academic institutions. On a regional scale, Australia and New Zealand emerge as the most improved, achieving a notable 35% gain in overall performance.

Across Engineering and Technology, over 3,730 subjects are evaluated, highlighting the field’s breadth. Computer Science and Information Systems lead in improvement, demonstrating strong upward momentum. Over 470 new subject entrants further emphasize growing global competition, with Southern Asia emerging as the top-performing region, up 45%.

Biological Sciences ranks first in year-on-year improvement, indicating strong development trends. The rankings also add more than 430 new entrants, with Northern Africa posting the highest regional growth at 43%.

Economics and Econometrics show the strongest improvement in Social Sciences and Management, while more than 640 new subjects signal expanding participation. Southern Asia leads regional gains with a 41% increase, contributing to over 1,650 upward shifts.
