Team Europe captain Luke Donald has delivered an update on his future with the team after successfully leading the tourists to victory on American soil last weekend.

Donald, who captained Team Europe's triumphant win over the United States in Italy two years ago, steered them to victory again with a 15-13 at Bethpage Black, despite Team USA launching a late comeback to set up a nervy finish.

The 47-year-old is now the first Team Europe captain to win the Ryder Cup in USA since Jose Maria Olazabal in 2012 and the last Englishman to do so since Tony Jacklin in 1987.

Asked whether he would consider captaining Team Europe for a third successive Ryder Cup on Monday, Donald said: 'I'm never going to rule it out. I need time though.

'People thought I was crazy carrying on last time after winning in Italy but now winning home and away is pretty special.

'But I want to enjoy the moment and I know plenty of people over here so will probably be celebrating for a few days yet.'

Despite admitting he is open to a return, Donald urged that he would need time to think about it

The 45th Ryder Cup was unfortunately marred by ugly scenes of abuse towards Team Europe's players, as American fans relentlessly shouted expletives and vile chants at the golfers throughout the weekend.

Rory McIlroy was subjected to continual taunts and attempts to disrupt his game, while his wife Erica Stoll shockingly had a drink thrown at her from the crowd on Sunday.

Addressing the behaviour of the fans, Donald added: 'We want to play the game in the right spirit, we want it tough but without going over the line.'

Meanwhile, 'ashamed' former Team USA captain Tom Watson has hit out at American fans for their 'rude' behaviour towards the tourists.

'I'd like to congratulate @RyderCupEurope on their victory. Your team play the first few days was sensational,' he posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

'More importantly, I'd like to apologize for the rude and mean-spirited behavior from our American crowd at Bethpage. As a former player, Captain and as an American, I am ashamed of what happened. #RyderCup.'
