TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake with an updated parameter of 4.9-magnitude shook the Tomini Bay area, East Bolaang Mongondow, North Sulawesi, on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 12:32 p.m. Jakarta time.

The earthquake was centered at sea, 127 kilometers southeast of Tutuyan City, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 54 kilometers.

“Based on the epicenter and the depth of its hypocenter, the shallow earthquake was caused by rock deformation in the Maluku Sea Plate,” BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono said in his statement on Thursday.

“The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake has an oblique thrust mechanism,” Daryono added.

Based on the shakemap estimation, this tremor caused shaking in the Nuangan and East Pinolosian areas with an intensity scale of II-III MMI, where the vibrations are experienced inside houses, akin to trucks passing by.

In Motongkad, East Bolaang Mongondow, people felt the quake at III MMI intensity, but BMKG has not received any reports of damages caused by the earthquake. Modeling results show that this earthquake has no tsunami potential.

As of 12:50 p.m., BMKG did not record any aftershock activity.

BMKG advised the residents to remain calm and otherwise vigilant of any unverified claims, as well as to “avoid cracked or damaged buildings.”
