M6.1 Earthquake Damages 12 Buildings in Boltim, 11 Aftershocks Follow

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The M6.1 earthquake that struck Bolaang Mongondow Timur (Boltim), North Sulawesi, on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, damaged a total of 11 houses and one place of worship. The tremor, as measured by BMKG, reached an intensity scale of up to IV Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), reportedly lasting for 2-3 seconds and causing the mentioned damage.

A report from the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) indicated that a total of 35 people were affected by the quake, which occurred at 05:55 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB) or 6:55 AM local time.

The impact data was collected until Wednesday evening. During this time, the Quick Response Team of the East Bolaang Mongondow District Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), along with the joint team, continued to gather data and monitor the incident location, as well as clear debris from the damaged houses.

"To all regional government elements and residents of East Bolaang Mongondow Regency, always be vigilant against the potential for aftershocks that may occur at any time," reads the appeal issued by BNPB in a written statement made by Head of the Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, BMKG recorded that aftershocks continued to occur and were felt in East Bolaang Mongondow today, February 27, 2025. The latest aftershock occurred on Thursday morning at 08:08 AM with a magnitude of M4.7 and was felt at an intensity of II-III MMI in Kotamobagu and II MMI in Southeast Minahasa.

According to BMKG, the earthquake was the 11th aftershock with noticeable tremors. Its epicenter was located at sea, 47 kilometers southeast of Tutuyan, Boltim, or two kilometers from the main shaking last Wednesday morning. It maintained the same depth of 10 kilometers.
