Man United vs Chelsea - Premier League LIVE: Latest score and updates as Robert Sanchez is sent off just MINUTES into Old Trafford clash

Follow Daily Mail Sport's live blog for the latest score, team news and updates as Manchester United host Chelsea at Old Trafford in the Premier League, with Chris Wheeler, Nathan Salt, and Kieran Gill reporting from the ground.

'Big fistbumps'

One of the best things about that lengthy VAR check was how stressed Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez were in the director's box. Big fistpumps when it was given

VAR: GOAL STANDS! - Man United

It stands!

What do I know, eh?

VAR takes its sweet time as always, but they rule that Bruno Fernandes is onside and the goal is given.

Trevoh Chalobah's trailing leg played him on.

VAR CHECKING GOAL

Oooooh, hold your horses for a second.

This looks like it may be offside, you know. It's tight, but Bruno Fernandes looks off here.

VAR is checking.

Goal:Man United 1-0 Chelsea (Fernandes 14')

MAN UNITED DO TAKE ADVANTAGE!

Bruno Fernandes just loves a goal against Chelsea, and he delivers against the Blues yet again.

The Manchester United captain ghosts in behind the defence to slide in Patrick Dorgu's header, and this place goes wild.

Fully deserved.

'Just give Mbeumo the ball'

Give Bryan Mbeumo the ball at every opportunity. If that isn't the plan, the plan is wrong, in my opinion.

Man United 0-0 Chelsea

What is it about Chelsea and this ground?

It's like there is some sort of bad juju on them when they come here; the Blues just fall apart.

I know, it's early doors, but come on... who seriously thinks they will win this game now?

I don't.

'Long game ahead for Blues'

What the actual... That's both of Chelsea's wingers removed within six minutes of this match. Long old game ahead for Enzo Maresca and Co.

Man United 0-0 Chelsea

I'm not quite sure how Chelsea is going to survive here.

Manchester United started brightly while the visitors have had 11 men, and now that they have 10, they are just battering them.

Cross after cross, shot after shot, United are giving it everything in the early stages.

Can they capitalise early doors? I mean, surely they have to.

SUBSTITUTION: Man United 0-0 Chelsea

Erm... this is a surprising call.

Enzo Maresca isn't making just the one switch, but he is making two. Wow.

He makes a whole system switch-up, taking off Estevao Willian for Filip Jorgensen, and he also hooks Pedro Neto for Tosin Adarabioyo.

Not often you see that.

Man United 0-0 Chelsea

My colleague Nathan Salt wants me to tell you all that he called that happening.

He sent me a snippet to post just before Robert Sanchez has his brain fart that said, 'this has got a goalkeeping howler or two all over it'.

Fair play, Nathan, you were spot on.

RED CARD: Man United 0-0 Chelsea

Robert Sanchez, what have you done?!?!

The Spaniard is sent for an early bath (not like he is already soaked) after a moment of madness.

Bryan Mbeumo is clipped in over the top, and Sanchez rushes out of his box and just cleans him out.

The referee takes his time to decide and then brandishes the red card. I mean, it's deserved, that was a honker from the goalkeeper.

The worst possible start for Chelsea.

CHANCE! Man United 0-0 Chelsea

OK, I've just been silenced.

There is that Old Trafford roar as teh ball is switched to Bryna Mbeumo at the back post.

The winger is in, he pulls the trigger, can he give United the perfect start? Nope, Robert Sanchez denies him.

Man United 0-0 Chelsea

This is meant to be a big game, right?

Well, if you didn't know who was playing and just closed your eyes, the atmosphere wouldn't tell you that.

It is deafly silent in Old Trafford, these fans are barely making a single sound.

They must all be moaning to each other about being soaked.

KICK-OFF: Man United 0-0 Chelsea

Has the rain gotten even heavier since my last post?

I didn't think it was possible, but those players look like a bunch of drowned rats as the game gets underway.

Oh well, they will need to get over it. It's time to get cracking.

Let it rain, let it pour

I hope those fans have their waterproofs with them.

I mean, when I said there was heavy rain, I blooming meant it. It's lashing it down here at Old Trafford and there are no signs of it stopping.

The players emerge from the tunnel, and their fancy pre-match jackets are all drenched within ten seconds of stepping out onto the pitch.

I don't know about you, but I would hate playing in this weather.

It's going to make the game interesting, these conditions. It ain't just wet, but it's hella windy too.

I miss the summer sunshine. This is rubbish.

Who will Ratcliffe be rooting for?

That may seem like an odd subheading, but hear me out.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a boyhood Chelsea fan, and those feelings usually don't subside.

It's a win-win situation for the Manchester United owner. United win, then that's huge for him, and if they lose, well, at least it was the club he loves who beat them.

Obviously, he will want United to win, though... right?

FIVE-minute warning

Oooooh, it's time to get excited.

the teams have finished their warm-ups and the atmosphere is bubbling at the wet and windy Old Trafford.

Honestly, guys, the weather is actually horrendous here in Manchester. It is hammering it down. Relentless.

Anyway, we are five minutes from kick-off, and I, for one, am buzzing.

'Amorim has to adapt'

Jamie Redknapp, former Liverpool midfielder, on Sky Sports:

You have to adapt. If you're losing a game, sometimes you have to throw caution to the wind, take one of the centre-backs off and go to a back four.
That's the problem. The Grimsby game is an example, when he never changed the system. That is a sign of madness, it's not going to work.

Big boos for Garnacho

My word, that is a lot of boos.

I knew Manchester United fans didn't like Alejandro Garnacho; they have made that clear, but this is still mad.

I'm not sure I have ever seen a player booed that loudly when leaving the warm-up.

I mean, it's not even the game yet... calm down lads. Save those boos for when you actually need to distract Garnacho.

Not that I condone booing, of course.

Back-to-back?

Guys, be warned, there is about to be a semi-positive post regarding Manchester United.

I know, I know, shocking right?

The thing is, no matter how poor Manchester United's form is overall, they have the chance to win back-to-back home games today. Yep, you are reading that correctly.

Manchester United have won two of their last three home Premier League matches (L1), as many as in their previous 11 at Old Trafford combined (W2 D2 L7).

They are looking for consecutive home league victories within the same season and under the same manager for the first time since December 2023 under Erik ten Hag.

It will take a monumental effort to earn three points today, though.

'Stage set for Garnacho to haunt Amorim'

More than a smattering of boos around Old Trafford as Alejandro Garnacho comes out to warm up with the other Chelsea substitutes 21 days after leaving United for Stamford Bridge.
The stage is set for him to come on and haunt Ruben Amorim today. It’s pouring with rain in Manchester which is likely to have an impact on proceedings.

'I can't see United winning'

Chris Sutton, former Chelsea striker, on BBC Sport:

Where United are fortunate is that they have had a week off since losing the Manchester derby, while Chelsea were beaten by Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
It is a massive plus for United that they don't have European football this season. You can't moan about having less games and that should give them the physical advantage here.
Even so, how can you put together a case for United winning this game? I just can't. Chelsea are not the finished article either, but they are playing some good stuff. They have also got Cole Palmer firing again and he will make the difference.

The Theatre of Nightmares for Chelsea

Chelsea absolutely hate playing at Old Trafford. I mean, it's easy to see why.

They haven't won there in the Premier League since 2013. Yep, you are reading that correctly.

While teams like Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest have managed to take points away from the 'Theatre of Dreams' in recent years, a win seems to always evade the Blues.

Even last year, when Manchester United were a steaming pile of... yeah, you know what I mean, Enzo Maresca's side could only manage a draw at Old Trafford.

Surely that 12-year run will come to an end soon - maybe even today.

Amorim's last chance?

Today feels big for Ruben Amorim. In fact, it's massive.

Yeah, yeah, I know that the board claims to be sticking with Ruben Amorim, no matter how badly things continue to get, but personally, I don't believe them.

It's been another miserable start to the season, and things just aren't getting better under Amorim; they are only getting worse.

United were a right mess at the Etihad last week, they were lucky they left having only conceded three goals. Yep, I did say *only*.

If they get battered again today like they did last week, then I just can't see Amorim surviving past this weekend.

You feel he has to win today to save his job. Well, I do.

Can Estevao introduce himself?

Warm welcome awaits Alejandro Garnacho methinks, judging by the songs being sung outside of Old Trafford. It goes: 'Who’s that t*** from Argentina? Who’s that money-grabbing w****? Garnacho is his name and he hasn’t got a brain and he won’t be winning trophies anymore.' Imagine a fair few Chelsea fans would be willing to put money on them lifting silverware before United.
Estevao Willian has been impressive for Chelsea since signing, but it feels as if we're waiting for that game where the 18-year-old Brazilian properly introduces himself to the Premier League. He starts here, so maybe that will be today.

Chelsea Team News - Estevao STARTS

Enzo Maresca has made a couple of changes.

Wesley Fofana comes into the defence to make the backline look considerably stronger.

Estevao Willian is the other change as the youngster comes into form part of a formidable frontline.

Strong side, this.

Man United Team News - Maguire STARTS

Ruben Amorim just loves switching up his defence, doesn't he?

I don't get it, he always makes at least one change to his backline every match. He still doesn't know his best defence.

Harry Maguire comes in as one of two changes, with Casemiro joining him in the team.

Senne Lammens remains on the bench, and Matheus Cunha returns to the matchday squad.

Garnacho is BACK

Guess who's back, back again? Alejandro's back, tell your friends.

Garnach returns to Old Trafford looking a little like Slim Shady himself with that trim.

I wonder what is going through the Argentine's head right now as he prepares to take on his former employers, with whom he is not on good terms.

What I can tell you is that if he is to face them, it will have to be from the bench. Thought he might start, but obviously not.

I will give you the rest of the team news ASAP (Rocky).

Colossal clash in Manchester

Are we ready for more?

It's already been a cracking Saturday of Premier League football, which started with the Merseyside derby, but the best is yet to come.

In years gone by, Manchester United facing Chelsea would have been a huge title race clash. These two used to fight tooth and nail for the Premier League in the early 2000s.

Not anymore, though. Well, certainly not in the case of United.

After being embarrassed in the Manchester derby last week, Ruben Amorim's side will be desperate to put things right. This is a must-win game for them.

The good news for them is that no matter how good Chelsea are, they seem to do terribly at Old Trafford. They are one of the only sides that still struggle there.

Can they break their 12-year hoodoo today? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Right, let's get cracking.
