TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A massive Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage severely crippled some of the world’s largest applications and websites, including Snapchat, Alexa, Reddit, and Wordle, on Monday, October 20, 2025. The disruption began at approximately 2:40 a.m. ET and was felt globally, disrupting users across social media platforms, gaming services, food delivery apps, streaming media, and financial platforms.
AWS Outage's Root Cause Traced to Northern Virginia
Numerous services relying on AWS cloud computing power concomitantly encountered stone walls beginning Monday morning. Amazon confirmed the problems originated from its data center in Northern Virginia, known as the US-East-1 cluster, where the Domain Name System, or DNS, obstructed applications from detecting the correct address for AWS’s DynamoDB API.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, this AWS outage was not the first major issue to trouble the Virginia cluster in four years. With thousands of sites affected, the event quickly became the largest internet disruption since last year’s CrowdStrike malfunction impacted banks, airports, and hospitals worldwide.
AP News added that AWS is a critical provider responsible for managing the computing infrastructure of millions of customers, including major corporations, government departments, and universities.
A website tracking online outages, DownDetector, posted on its official Facebook page that there were more than 11 million user reports at over 2,500 companies.
AWS Outage Issues Resolved
Amazon confirmed that the massive outage of its cloud computing services had been resolved after a day-long disruption.
Earlier, reports of issues had flooded in across global services, including Amazon’s own offerings. Users of Ring doorbell cameras and Alexa-powered smart speakers submitted tickets reporting errors, while others found Amazon websites and Kindle services inaccessible.
During the disruption, Amazon provided technical explanations, advising users, "We are working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery. We recommend customers continue to retry any failed requests," as reported by 9News Australia.
Past Records of AWS Outages
This is not the first time Amazon Web Services (AWS) has faced major disruptions impacting global operations, AP News noted.
A similar outage was reported in 2023, temporarily affecting multiple prominent internet platforms. Other disruptions took place in 2020 and 2017, with the most prolonged outage occurring in late 2021, when operations across payment apps, streaming services, and airlines were halted for more than five hours.
Patrick Burgess, a cybersecurity expert from the U.K.-based BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, commented that AWS and its competitors like Google and Microsoft have “well-established processes” to manage such incidents, which are typically resolved within hours rather than days.
