TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Secretary General of the International Trade Union Confederation Asia-Pacific (ITUC-AP), Shoya Yoshida, attended the International May Day commemoration at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta on Thursday, May 1, 2025. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also came to the event.
In his speech, Shoya stated that International May Day is not just a celebration, but a symbol of workers' struggle and solidarity. He said this at the commemoration event at Monas.
Shoya emphasized that Indonesian workers must continue to fight for their rights. He mentioned that the government and employers also need to collaborate with workers. According to Shoya, dialogue among all parties is necessary to create fair, inclusive, and protective labor laws in Indonesia.
Shoya also appreciated President Prabowo's presence at the May Day commemoration at Monas. He said, "The presence of President Prabowo is evidence of the government's commitment to the future and welfare of workers in Indonesia."
Prabowo and several other politicians from the Red and White Cabinet and the House of Representatives attended the May Day commemoration at Monas. Various labor and worker confederations also participated in the event, including the Confederation of All Indonesian Workers' Unions (KSPSI), Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI), and Indonesian Prosperity Trade Unions (KSBSI).
The International May Day commemoration at Monas is not the only workers' action on May Day this year. Several other labor unions, such as the Congress of Indonesian Labor Alliance (KASBI), held demonstrations in front of the Parliament building. Other actions also took place in various regions.
During the demonstration in front of the Parliament building, KASBI Chairman Sunarno referred to President Prabowo's statement during the International May Day commemoration as mere political maneuvering. He stated that everything Prabowo mentions at Monas needs to be proven.
"What President Prabowo conveyed to us is only a gimmick or pure political maneuvering because it has not been realized," said Sunarno in front of the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
