TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Megawati Hangestri bids farewell to Red Sparks and the South Korean Women's Volleyball League (V-League). She will not be playing there next season.
Megawati has declined a new contract offer from Red Sparks. She has even left Korea to return to Indonesia on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
Red Sparks has also bid farewell and expressed gratitude through its Instagram page. They said Megawati is the hottest and smartest player ever to grace the field. She displayed dazzling performance in two seasons, season 23-24, and season 24-25.
The club also thanked Megawati for being part of Red Sparks. She has always been a reliable breaker for the club. She has always been the passion and laughter for her fans.
As seen in a video uploaded on KBS, Megawati has left Korea this Thursday. At the airport, she bid farewell and explained her reasons for leaving Red Sparks.
Megawati answered KBS reporters' questions in Indonesian. In the video, she expressed her gratitude as she gained many experiences in two years. Initially, she came to Korea with doubts, but she ended up staying for two years.
Megawati revealed her reason for leaving the V-League. She said she has to take care of her mother. She's been away from her parents for two years and stated that family is more important than anything.
About her favorite player in the V-League, Mega can't choose. She said everyone cares, everyone is close to her. She also mentioned that the other players do not want her to leave Korea.
In the video, Ko Hee-jin is seen accompanying her to the airport. They hugged several times. The Red Sparks coach was even seen crying and delivering emotional statements in an interview conducted in Korean.
Mega thought that Ko Hee-jin was the head coach, but as time went on, he became like a friend and a father to her.
She also thanked the Red Sparks' supporters. She is grateful for the support and asks for continued support for her and the club.
Megawati became the best Asian quota player in the V-League. Last season, she scored 736 points with a 44 percent attack success rate. This season, her performance has improved significantly. She scored 802 points with a 48 percent attack success rate in the regular season.
Last season, Red Sparks were defeated in the semifinal playoffs. This season, they made it to the final. In the final, Megawati was the top scorer three times, but had to watch her team lose to the Pink Spiders 3-2. She led the team by scoring 153 points in the first to fifth final matches.
