TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meta, the technology company behind Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger, has rolled out new features aimed at detecting and preventing fraud on its messaging platforms, with a particular focus on protecting elderly users.
According to a report by TechCrunch on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, WhatsApp will now display warnings when users attempt to share their screen during a video call.
On Messenger, messages suspected of fraud will be flagged and analyzed by artificial intelligence for further review.
Meta claims that in the first half of 2025 alone, it detected and halted around 8 million accounts involved in fraudulent activity, spanning countries such as Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines.
The company also took action against over 21,000 Facebook pages and accounts impersonating customer service to deceive users.
The company noted that these scams have become so frequent that many Facebook page administrators ignore messages from customer service. Fraudsters often target older adults across social media, messaging apps, dating platforms, and even cryptocurrency schemes.
On WhatsApp, the new warning appears when users try to share their screen with unknown contacts during video calls.
This tactic is commonly used to trick victims into providing sensitive information, such as bank account details and verification codes.
On Messenger, an advanced fraud detection system is being tested to analyze incoming messages. Users flagged for potential risk will receive a warning reading: “Be careful, you are at risk of losing money.” The alert also provides examples of common scams, including work-from-home offers and easy-money schemes, and allows users to block or report the suspicious account.
Meta has also introduced reminder features and alerts for other types of scams, including shipping and instant payment fraud.
The company is developing a dedicated WhatsApp security center and issues warnings about seasonal scams, such as romance fraud around Valentine’s Day, although these are not exclusively targeted at elderly users.
Beyond these updates, Meta has joined the National Elder Fraud Coordination Center, a non-profit that collaborates with law enforcement and companies like AARP, Amazon, Capital One, Google, Microsoft, and Walmart to tackle scams aimed at older adults.
