Minister Assures Safety of Indonesian Migrant Workers in Middle East

4 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Migrant Workers Protection Mukhtarudin has confirmed that there have been no evacuation requests from migrant workers in the Middle East thus far. The minister assured that no Indonesian workers have been affected by the war the US and Israel have waged on Iran since Saturday, February 28, 2026.

"Alhamdulillah until today, there have been no requests for evacuation, neither from the Middle Eastern governments nor from our representatives at the Indonesian Embassy. Meaning, everything remains under control," Mukhtarudin said when met at the ministry office in Jakarta on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

This Golkar politician explained that Indonesian migrant workers in conflict-stricken regions such as Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates remain safe. But some workers in Kuwait were traumatized by the sounds of bombs falling near their residential apartments.

"It was traumatizing, but we have provided them with counseling and assistance," he said.

To anticipate the escalation of conflict, the ministry has formed a crisis team to monitor geopolitical updates in real-time regarding thousands of Indonesian migrant workers in affected countries.

Mukhtaruddin also urged Indonesian migrant workers to actively report to the Indonesian Embassy and official government channels if they find themselves in emergency situations.

"In principle, we, as the government, together with the representatives at the Indonesian Embassy and Consulates General, will be all-out monitoring and following the day-to-day developments and every second of the escalation in the Middle East," he added.

The conflict escalation in the Middle East has intensified since the U.S. missile strike against Iran on Saturday, February 28, 2026. Iran retaliated by launching attacks on several U.S. military bases in the Gulf region, including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. The war broke out after the U.S. and Iran failed to reach an agreement on nuclear use during negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 26, 2026.
