TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, claims that the 13-14 percent airfare discount during Eid will not burden the finances of airlines in the country. This policy applies by reducing airport fees, lowering avtur prices at 37 airports, reducing fuel surcharges, and the government covering the 6 percent VAT. This discount applies to flights from March 24 to April 7, 2025. "It does not affect the costs incurred by airlines because we know that airline margins are very thin," said Dudy to reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
Therefore, according to Dudy, the airfare discount policy will not hinder airlines' efforts to recover the number of aircraft post-Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, Dudy said that the shortage of aircraft is another issue. Moreover, according to Dudy, the shortage of aircraft is not only happening in Indonesia. "Aircraft manufacturers are limited to just Boeing and Airbus. Each has its own problems, so the number of aircraft is also limited globally," said Dudy.
Dudy said that the Ministry of Transportation will seek to reduce the operational burden of airlines. One of them is related to the cost of spare parts. He claimed that this issue has been discussed with other ministries and institutions, such as the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Industry, and the Ministry of Finance. This coordination involves the burden of import duties on spare parts. "Hopefully, to reduce airlines' costs," said Dudy.
Nevertheless, Dudy said that his ministry cannot entirely press the operational costs of airlines. This is because there are issues that cannot be controlled by the Ministry of Transportation, such as exchange rates and avtur costs. Meanwhile, both components significantly contribute to the high costs of air transportation operations. "It's not easy, but in the future, we will try to do what we can for the airlines," said Dudy.
