TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Wahyu Sakti Trenggono admitted that his KKP ministry was caught off guard by the discovery of the illegal sea fence in Tangerang, Banten. He made this admission during a hearing with Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR) today.
Trenggono attributed this oversight to the KKP's current limitations in terms of facilities and infrastructure for effective marine supervision. He proposed an increase in the ministry's budget as a key solution to address this issue.
“We realize that the KKP currently faces challenges in marine supervision due to inadequate infrastructure and operational support that needs a review of the Marine Law to enhance the KKP's budget, monitoring, and oversight of its duties and responsibilities,” Trenggono stated on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
During the hearing with the commission overseeing agriculture, forestry, and marine affairs, Trenggono assured the members that the KKP had completed its investigation into the sea fence incident. He also pledged to improve communication and strengthen cooperation with relevant agencies. “We will re-strengthen coordination,” he said.
Previously, Trenggono announced that the owner of the sea fence in the northern coastal area of Tangerang Regency would face an administrative fine of Rp18 million per kilometer.
Although the exact amount of the fine has not yet been determined, he confirmed that the owner of the 30.16-kilometer sea fence in Tangerang waters would be fined.
“We don't know how long it is. [The total fine is] based on the area. If the fence extends 30 kilometers, it will be multiplied by Rp18 million per kilometer,” Trenggono stated during an interview at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.
He claimed that the identification of the sea fence's owner is currently under investigation in collaboration with Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of BPN Nusron Wahid. “We will impose the fine. Our focus is on administrative sanctions, while criminal matters will be handled by the police,” Trenggono concluded.
