TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director of Citizens Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, revealed that as many as 525 Indonesian citizens (WNI) have been recorded by the authorities of Myanmar to be involved in online scam.
He mentioned that these Indonesian citizens are still 'trapped' in Myawaddy, Myanmar.
"This is a significantly large number," said Judha during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Thursday, March 6, 2025.
Judha explained that initially, the number of Indonesian citizens in Myanmar recorded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as of February 23 was 366 people. However, this number has now increased after the confirmation by Myanmar authorities.
Judha conveyed that this data refers to reports made by Indonesian citizens in Myanmar to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Indonesian representatives in the country. These reports, Judha emphasized, were also accessed by Indonesian citizens in Myanmar through various other channels.
Currently, Judha emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with the Myanmar Authorities and related agencies to help the Indonesian citizens trapped in Myawaddy be evacuated.
"We are coordinating intensively with Myanmar to ensure that no Indonesian citizens are left behind in Myawaddy," he said.
Not only that, Judha also revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with the government of Thailand to repatriate Indonesian citizens to Indonesia. This group will go through Mae Sot on their way to Bangkok before returning to Jakarta by commercial flights.
Judha mentioned that most of the scheduled evacuees have been in shelters before being scheduled to return to Indonesia.
"We will update the latest developments regarding their repatriation process," he said.
Judha Nugraha also revealed that a total of 130 Indonesian citizens have been successfully repatriated to the country from Myawaddy throughout the year 2025. All of these Indonesian citizens were related to online scams in Myanmar.
"In total, 130 Indonesian citizens have been successfully evacuated from Myawaddy, Myanmar," he said.
Judha stated that the repatriation of these Indonesian citizens was carried out in two stages, with 46 people on February 21, 2025, and a further 84 people on February 28, 2025.
