TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has spoken with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand following a strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck both countries. The Foreign Ministry stated that the earthquake epicenter was located 13 kilometers north-northwest of Sagaing City, Myanmar.

The earthquake occurred on Friday, March 28, at around 1:00 p.m. local time. The tremors were also felt in the central and northern regions of Thailand, including the capital, Bangkok.

Director of Citizen Protection, Judha Nugraha, disclosed that the Foreign Ministry is currently coordinating with the Indonesian Embassies in Yangon and Bangkok. "Based on communication with the Indonesian community, there is currently no information about any Indonesian casualties in Myanmar and Thailand," Judha said in a written statement on Friday afternoon.

The ministry noted that several infrastructures in Mandalay were damaged in the quake, including the Old Sagaing Bridge, which connects Mandalay City with Sagaing Region.

This condition also led the shadow government of Myanmar to declare a state of emergency.

The Indonesian Embassy in Yangon is currently monitoring and coordinating with local authorities and the Indonesian community to identify Indonesian citizens affected by the earthquake.

"So far, several Indonesian citizens in the Mandalay area have reported that they are in good condition. The total number of Indonesian citizens in Myanmar is estimated to be around 250 people," said Judha.

Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared Bangkok as an emergency zone and instructed the relevant authorities to issue national warnings, public notifications via SMS and media, as well as military mobilization.

In addition, airports, hospitals, and transportation services in Bangkok have been put on alert. The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority has released an emergency hotline number 1555 through its official Facebook account to receive reports from earthquake-affected residents.

"So far, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens in Thailand as victims of the earthquake. The total number of Indonesians living in Thailand is approximately 2,379 people," Judha stated.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassies in Yangon and Bangkok urge Indonesian citizens to remain vigilant against subsequent aftershocks and to immediately contact the hotlines in case of an emergency, namely the Yangon Embassy hotline (+95 9 503 7055) and the Bangkok Embassy hotline (+65929031103).
