Months After Floods, Has Sumatra Fully Recovered?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sumatra is still grappling with infrastructure damage months after floods and landslides hit swathes of the region. The Indonesian government continues to rehabilitate the damage, especially for roads, bridges, residential areas, and public services.

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said the damage caused by the hydrometeorological disaster last year is spread in several areas in Aceh and North Sumatra. According to him, the government continues to repair the affected infrastructure.

"The most affected are the roads, bridges, houses, and other infrastructure," Budi said while attending the handover of health equipment at the Ministry of Health office in Jakarta, Thursday, 25 June 2026.

Besides basic infrastructure, several health facilities have also been damaged, for which the Indonesian government has earmarked rehabilitation funds for affected hospitals. The government is also conducting gradual improvements on healthcare facilities at the puskesmas level.

During the same occasion, the Ministry of Health received a donation of health equipment worth Rp1.5 billion, which will be distributed to eight affected districts and cities, namely, Aceh Tamiang, North Aceh, East Aceh, Central Aceh, Langkat, Central Tapanuli, South Tapanuli, and Agam.

The donation comes from fundraising run by the North Sumatra Youth group through the Care for Sumut Running activity. The donated equipment includes patient beds, sterilization equipment, digital blood pressure monitors, and dental units.

The Acting Head of the East Aceh Health Office, Rijalul Fikri, said health services in his area have returned to normal. However, several facilities still need repairs to improve service quality.

"Currently, our puskesmas are back to normal operations, but they still need repairs and the facilities must be strengthened," he said.

Rijalul cites Lokop Puskesmas in remote East Aceh as one of the health facilities that needed repair. According to him, the inpatient public health facility still requires new construction to support optimal provision of healthcare services for nearby residents.

This condition indicates that post-disaster challenges do not simply vanish once the emergency response period ends. In various regions, public facilities still require rehabilitation measures to provide basic services supporting resident activities.

Representative of the donors, Bara Hasibuan, said that the aid distributed through the Ministry of Health is expected to accelerate the recovery of the affected regions. According to him, funds from the public fundraising will also be used to support the education sector and the provision of clean water.
