Moto3 rider Noah Dettwiler suffered 'multiple' cardiac arrests after being involved in a horrific crash on Sunday, his father has revealed.

The Swiss star, 20, was airlifted to hospital following a collision with world champion rider Jose Antonio Rueda, 19, during a sighting lap on the day of the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The incident occurred as Rueda whizzed round the track's third corner. He found Dettwiler travelling slowly, likely due to a problem with his vehicle, and smashed straight into his rear.

A video of the crash showed the two bikes coming apart upon collision, with the  riders flying out of their saddles.

CIP Green's Dettwiler was left lying motionless on the circuit as ambulances and MotoGP medical teams rushing to provide treatment.

Both riders were eventually airlifted to hospital via helicopter in distressing scenes which sparked an outpouring of concern from the world of motorsports.

Now, Dettwiler's father has given racing publication Blick an update on his son's condition. He says the 20-year-old suffered 'multiple cardiac arrests' following the horrifying collision but is now 'stable' in the hospital.

The Swiss rider later underwent 'multiple surgeries' at a Kuala Lumpur hospital after losing 'a lot of blood', suffering spleen and lung injuries and an 'open fracture' in his leg.

'They fought for his life,' said Andy, Dettwiler's father.

An earlier statement provided by the young man's team yesterday read: 'This morning, during the sighting lap at Sepang, our rider Noah Dettwiler was involved in a serious accident.

'He was taken to the hospital in Kuala Lumpur and will need to undergo multiple surgeries.

'He is in good hands, and we kindly ask you to respect his privacy. We will not be sharing further details at this time.

'Noah is a true fighter, and the entire CIP Green Power team is right behind him. We will keep you updated as soon as possible.'

Rueda, the other driver involved in the collision, was lucky to escape with just a hand fracture. The Spaniard's team said he was 'awake and alert' in hospital hours afterwards.

'Noah's a fighter,' said his team CIP Green in a statement released hours after the collision

'Following the collision between José Antonio Rueda and Noah Dettwiler at the exit of turn 3 during the Moto3 sighting lap, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider has suffered a fracture to his hand. Rueda is currently awake and conscious in the hospital,' a Red Bull statement read.

'It was determined that Rueda did not suffer serious injuries to his head or torso, although he did suffer a severe concussion from the impact. He remains under observation, awaiting further tests on his hand and arm.'

The crash meant that some of the morning's races in Malaysia were delayed.

Alex Marquez, who eventually won the Grand Prix, dedicated his victory to the two injured Moto3 racers.

The 29-year-old said: 'My prayers and thoughts are with the guys. Still in my stomach I have some stressed feeling, so just keep fingers crossed for them.'

And Franco Morbidelli, who finished in fourth place, admitted the MotoGP event was overshadowed by the concerning events earlier in the day.

'A solid race after a difficult weekend in Australia, but now my main worry is on the two guys that had an accident early in the day,' the Italian said.

'I'm really worried about what's going on. Hopefully, everything is okay, or as okay as possible.

'Nothing really matters compared to what these guys are going through at the moment. We should all wait and hope for the best.'
