TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Mount Bromo Volcano Observation Post Bromo reported the activity of volcanic earthquakes accompanied by continuous tremors on Thursday, January 2, 2025, following reports of thick white crater smoke observed spewing up to 600 meters above the peak of Mount Bromo, Wednesday.
Wahyu Andrian Kusuma, an officer of the Bromo PGA Post in Probolinggo Regency, reported a number of seizures on the volcano which is administratively and geographically located in four districts, namely Probolinggo, Lumajang, Pasuruan and Malang.
Based on the seismograph at the monitoring post in Cemoro Lawang Hamlet, Ngadisari Village, Sukapura District, Probolinggo Regency, one deep volcanic earthquake was recorded with an amplitude of 31 mm, S-P 3.4 seconds and an earthquake duration of 31 seconds. There was also 1 continuous tremor earthquake with an amplitude of 0.5-1 mm, dominant 0.5 mm. In addition, there was 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 8 mm, S-P 18 seconds and an earthquake duration of 97 seconds.
Wahyu said that visually Mount Bromo is sometimes clearly visible until it is covered with fog. "The main crater smoke is observed to be white with a thin, medium, to thick intensity about 50-600 meters high from the summit," Wahyu said in a report quoted by Tempo, Thursday.
The activity level of Mount Bromo still remains Level II (Alert). The Center for Volcanology Mitigation and Geological Disaster (PVMBG) issued a number of recommendations related to the current level of Bromo activity, including the community around Mount Bromo and visitors/tourists/climbers not to enter the area within a radius of 1 kilometer from the active crater of Mount Bromo.
In addition, people around Mount Bromo, traders, tourists, climbers, and tourism managers of Mount Bromo should be aware of phreatic eruptions that are sudden and without being preceded by clear volcanic symptoms.
