Mount Dieng Raised to Alert Status Following Eruption; Toxic Gas Risk Reported in Several Craters

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has elevated the activity status of Mount Dieng in Wonosobo Regency, Central Java, from Normal to Alert. Head of the Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid, stated that this new status was followed by a ban on visitors and tourists entering the area within a 500-meter radius of the Sileri Crater's center.

“This starts from December 19, 2024, at 18:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time),” said Wafid in an official statement on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

Wafid's warning extends beyond highly active craters like Sileri. Visitors and tourists are also advised to avoid the Timbang Crater due to the risk of toxic CO2 gas. Several other craters are also considered hazardous, particularly if Mount Dieng experiences a phreatic eruption, which is characterized by a high concentration of dangerous gases.

On Wednesday afternoon, December 18, 2024, the Geological Agency recorded a phreatic eruption at Mount Dieng's Sileri Crater. Rain and fog hindered complete observation, but the team observed a 10-meter-high ash column with white smoke. Following the eruption, the team recorded one shallow volcanic earthquake and one deep volcanic earthquake.

“Which is associated with the presence of rock cracks in the body of the volcano (Dieng). It is estimated to be due to fluid pressure,” said Wafid.

The temperature of the Sileri Crater did not increase. The water in the crater, he noted, appeared clear, ranging in color from greenish, light gray, to blackish gray. The water volume in the Sileri Crater decreased, and significant mud sedimentation was observed around the crater rim.

A strong sulfur gas odor was also detected by the team. The highest concentrations of toxic gas were detected in the Timbang, Sinila, and Sikendang Craters. Review results indicated that CO2 gas in the Timbang Crater remained within the crater, meaning it had not yet dispersed.

The Geological Agency is now monitoring the potential for further mudflows in the Sileri Crater and several other Mount Dieng craters. The team is concerned about the possibility of phreatic eruptions occurring without preceding signs of increased volcanic activity. High rainfall can also increase the vapor phase within the hydrothermal system, potentially increasing the concentration of toxic volcanic gases, especially CO2, SO2, and H2S.

“The danger of phreatic eruptions also has the potential to occur in the Siglagah, Pagerkandang, and Candradimuka Craters,” said Wafid.
