TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rapid response team had difficulty assessing the condition of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which erupted again at 17:50 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) on Tuesday afternoon, June 17, 2025. The area around the volcano's crater was dark due to ash rain and gravel.
The eruption was marked by the emergence of hot clouds from the crater spreading in all directions. The height of the ash column of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was reported to reach more than 10 kilometers (Km).
The Head of the National Disaster Management Agency's Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said that some residents of Nurabelen Village, Ile Bura District, had evacuated to Konga. Nurebelen Village is one of the areas affected by gravel rain.
"Some local residents have also evacuated to Nileknoheng Village, which is 5 km away from the post or 12 km from the volcano crater," Muhari said in a written statement on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
After having difficulty observing the dark crater area due to ash rain, the monitoring post personnel of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki evacuated to the Church in Pululera Village. The monitoring area, which is 7 kilometers away from the eruption peak, was also showered with gravel stones. Seismic monitoring equipment still detects tremors, indicating ongoing volcanic activity.
According to Muhari, sand rain also hit several areas outside the disaster-prone zone (KRB). "Such as in Boru Village, Hewa Village, and Watobuku Village," he said.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has raised the status of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki from Alert (level III) to Caution (level IV). Local residents are urged to be alert for potential mudflows during heavy rain, especially around Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Nurabelen, Klatanlo, Hokeng jaya, Boru, and Nawakote.
This recent eruption is classified as a major eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in the first half of 2025. Eruptions with an equivalent strength, which produced an ash column as high as 6,000-10,000 kilometers, were last recorded from late 2023 to mid-2024.
