TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The peak area of Mount Merapi has reportedly been continuously drenched by rain on in the past week. The Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) noted that during the period of February 14-20, 2025, the intensity of rain had an impact on the increased water flow in rivers originating from the mountain.

Tourists and local residents are advised to be cautious considering the increased flow of river streams from the mountain could turn into dangerous cold lava floods. "In the past week, especially on February 15, 2025, there was an increase in flow in Kali Kuning and Kali Gendol," said Head of BPPTKG Yogyakarta, Agus Budi Santoso, on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

The increase in flow is suspected to be triggered by intense rain observed from the Mount Merapi Babadan Observation Post. With a rainfall of 39 millimeters per hour for 40 minutes. The BPPTKG Yogyakarta revealed that cold lava floods are not the only potential danger from Mount Merapi, which still has a level III or alert status. Because eruptions are still occurring with quite high volcanic activity in the form of effusive eruptions.

This week, lava avalanches from Merapi were observed to occur 64 times towards the southwest (upstream Kali Bebeng) up to a maximum distance of 1,900 meters, 17 times towards upstream Kali Krasak up to a maximum distance of 1,700 meters, and 57 times towards the west or upstream Kali Sat/Putih up to a maximum distance of 1,900 meters.Based on aerial photo analysis, the southwest dome of Merapi also experienced an increase in volume of 3,546,200 cubic meters. While the measured volume of the middle dome remained at 2,360,700 cubic meters.

"Monitoring data shows that the supply of magma from Mount Merapi is still ongoing, which can trigger hot cloud avalanches within the potential danger zone," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Yogyakarta City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Nur Hidayat stated that to face the potential floods and cold lava floods in the rivers of Yogyakarta City during the peak of February's rainfall, they have conducted a trial of the new Early Warning System (EWS) devices for flood early warning.

"Nine EWS devices have been successfully tested in the three largest rivers in Yogyakarta City, namely the Code River, Winongo River, and Gajang Wong River," he said.

For the Code River, the device was installed in Kampung Gampingan, Serangan, and Suryowijayan which are settlements along the river. Meanwhile, for the Winongo River, the device was installed in Kampung Ledok Tukangan, Jagalan Beji, and Mulyorejo. As for the Gajah Wong River, a similar device was installed in Kampung Gendeng, Balirejo, and Tegalgendu.

"This EWS is very important as an early warning tool to increase the preparedness of residents living along the riverbanks. All of these devices work automatically, once they detect an increase in flow above the safe threshold, they immediately give a danger signal," said Nur, who mentioned that a total of 26 EWS have been installed in Yogyakarta City.
