Mount Rinjani Cable Car Project Officially Canceled

8 hours ago 10

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The plan to build a cable car on Mount Rinjani via the Lombok Tengah route in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has been canceled. The Lombok Tengah Regency Government stated that the project's investor had disappeared.

"News from the investor disappeared, so it's canceled," said the Head of Bapperida Lombok Tengah, Lalu Wiranata, in Lombok Tengah, on Friday, July 4, 2025.

Construction of the cable car project began in 2022 with the laying of the first stone by a Chinese investor and the local government. The target is for the project to be completed in 2025.

Lalu Wiranata admitted to not knowing the reason for the project's cancellation by the Chinese investor. "Possibly due to internal company reasons," he said.

However, the local government hopes the construction of the cable car will continue. The Lombok Tengah Government has reported this to the NTB provincial government to find another investor.

Support for KEK Mandalika

The construction of the cable car at Mount Rinjani is expected to increase the number of foreign and domestic tourists in Lombok Tengah. The facility is also expected to bolster the development of the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Lombok.

He said that the cable car, once built, will not only become a source of regional original income (PAD). However, the tourist destination can also have an impact on the economic growth of the community and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

"There will definitely be an economic impact. Hopefully, it can be realized," he said.

Cable Car Location

The protected forest area in Karang Sidemen Village, Batukliang Utara District, Lombok Tengah Regency, was chosen as the location for the construction of this cable car. The built cable car route will be 10 kilometers long. The cable car will occupy an area covering 500 hectares. Besides the cable car, the area will be equipped with supporting facilities.

The construction of this tourist facility is estimated to cost Rp2.2 trillion. The peak location for the cable car stop is located about two kilometers below the Pelawangan Rinjani Post.

NTB Governor Zulkieflimansyah said the construction of a cable car from Karang Sidemen Village in Lombok Tengah to Mount Rinjani will boost tourism in the province.

"The construction of this cable car makes NTB Province a complete tourism area," he said while laying the first stone together with the Regent of Lombok Tengah, Lalu Fathul Bahri, in 2022. This cable car showcases Lombok's natural beauty and is an alternative for tourists who are unable to hike Mount Rinjani.
