TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two Indonesian senior female climbers, Lilie Wijayati Poegiono and Elsa Laksono, died at the summit of the ice mountain Carstensz , also known as Carstensz Pyramid, on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
Elsa Laksono passed away while descending from the summit of Carstensz Pyramid due to indications of acute mountain sickness (AMS) or hypothermia. The victim was evacuated to the Mimika General Hospital (RSUD) from 06:10 to 09:26 WIT (Eastern Indonesia Time).
Lilie Wijayanti Poegiono was declared dead due to AMS symptoms while descending from the peak of Carstensz Pyramid on Saturday at around 02:07 WIT after being evacuated by fellow companions and guides at Teras Dua.
Papua is also known for Carstensz Peak or more precisely known as Puncak Jaya. The mountain, located in the Sudirman Range, Central Papua, has an altitude of 4,884 meters above sea level. This peak even ranks among the seven highest peaks in the world.
With its extreme altitude and inclusion in the World Seven Summits, Carstensz Peak has challenging terrain. Not to mention the unpredictable weather that often occurs in this area. Therefore, before embarking on a climb, it is important to know the various routes that can be chosen to reach the summit of this mountain.
1. Ugimba Sugapa Route
Climbing through the Sugapa route is located in Sugapa Village, Intan Jaya Regency. In this climb, every climber will pass through the Kemabu and Nabu Rivers with very strong currents. This climbing route has very challenging terrain. However, climbers will be treated to the Valley of Lakes, located at an altitude of 4,261 meters above sea level.
Upon arriving at the plateau of this valley, climbers will experience a drastic drop in temperature. Climbers will even start to see ice particles falling in the early morning. Then climbers still have to climb for approximately 6 hours to reach the snowy peak. In reaching this peak, climbers must climb cliffs with an 80-degree vertical gradient.
2. Ilaga Route
The Ilaga route can be another option for climbers who want to ascend this perennially snow-capped peak. Later, climbers must fly from Timika. In this route, climbers will depart from Nabire Village, in the northern area of Carstensz. This route will not pass through rivers like the previous route, but through mountains and dense forests. So, extra caution is needed and an understanding of the conditions of the forest to be traversed.
3. Singa Route
The Singa route is the least used climbing route to reach the highest peak in Papua due to its very steep terrain. Special training and extensive experience are required to climb this peak, as the rock climbing skills of every climber become a challenging aspect of this route. This route is usually chosen by very experienced climbers. This climb will pass through the eastern area of Carstensz Peak.
4. Helicopter Route
If one has the means, climbers can use the easiest route to reach Carstensz Peak. Currently, this time-saving and efficient option is being offered by climbing promoters. Usually, climbers can book a helicopter through climbing promoters and arrive directly at the base camp at the foot of Carstensz Peak.
