Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 3,471

2 days ago 25

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of casualties from the Myanmar earthquake continues to rise to 3,471, as search and rescue efforts continue to find more bodies. This was reported by the government media on Sunday, April 6, 2025, as cited by Anadolu.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred on March 28 has also caused 4,671 people to be injured and 214 people to be declared missing as of Saturday.

Around 653 people who were trapped under the rubble were successfully rescued by local and international search and rescue teams. Meanwhile, 682 bodies have been successfully evacuated from the debris of buildings.

The United Nations' top humanitarian official, Tom Fletcher, who visited survivors in Mandalay - the city near the earthquake's epicenter - described the situation as "staggering" and called on the international community to "unite in support of the people of Myanmar."

Several humanitarian aid groups are concerned that the combination of uncertain rainfall and extreme heat could trigger disease outbreaks, including cholera, for survivors who are forced to stay outdoors.

"Many families are sleeping outside the ruins of their homes, while the bodies of loved ones are still being pulled from the debris. There is a real fear of aftershocks," Fletcher wrote through account X.

Meanwhile, the Yangon-Mandalay railway line and Mandalay International Airport have been reopened after being temporarily closed due to earthquake damage.

Earthquake tremors were reported to have damaged 60 embankments and 11 railway bridges along the line, as well as causing track deformations at several points.

In neighboring Thailand, the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 24 people, while 77 others are still reported missing.
