TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has canceled his planned trip to the United States capital, Washington D.C., next week, as announced by his office on Thursday, July 16, 2026, as reported by Anadolu.
In a statement, the office mentioned that the funeral of US Senator Lindsey Graham "appears to have been postponed until the end of the month." "As a result, the prime minister will not travel to the United States next week," the statement added.
The Israeli public broadcaster, KAN, reported on Wednesday that Netanyahu was scheduled to depart for Washington on Saturday, July 18. He was slated to meet with US President Donald Trump on Monday, July 20, and attend Graham's funeral on Tuesday, July 21.
Later on Wednesday, July 15, the US news outlet Axios, citing a senior White House official, reported that there were no meetings scheduled between Trump and Netanyahu in the president's agenda for the following week.
The cancellation comes amid the close ties between the US and Israel, which have recently been strained due to differences in regional policies. Trump has been urging Israel to withdraw its troops from Lebanon and Syria, a move that Netanyahu opposes.
Trump Furious with Netanyahu Again
Trump was reportedly once again furious with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he considered to be undermining and trying to control him, as reported by Axios on Thursday, July 16, 2026, as cited by Raw Story.
Their dispute, despite having been close allies as right-wing leaders in their respective countries for years, has involved several recent incidents.
One of them, according to the report, was the surprise of White House staff members when reading news in the Israeli media a few days ago mentioning that President Trump would receive a visit from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, July 20. Yet, there was no scheduled meeting between the two leaders.
"Trump said at the time that Netanyahu could visit right after the president returned from the NATO summit in Ankara,," an internal source revealed to Axios.
"Our impression was that Bibi [Netanyahu] was trying to will a meeting into existence."
This is not the only issue widening the rift between Trump and Netanyahu.
According to the report, Trump's anger had escalated after Netanyahu appeared on Fox News—just before Trump departed for Ankara. In the interview, Netanyahu criticized President Trump's intentions to sell F-35 fighter jets to Turkey.
The relationship between Trump and the Israeli leader had already deteriorated for months prior to this.
This was triggered by Trump's frustration with the lack of a conclusive resolution regarding the Gaza invasion that began in October 2023 and led to an Israeli genocide that killed at least 73,000 Palestinian citizens, the majority being women and children.
A few weeks ago, Trump was reported to have rebuked Netanyahu in a phone conversation marked by harsh words, telling him, "everybody hates you."
