The New Orleans Saints are promoting rookie quarterback Tyler Shough to the first team ahead of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams, NFL Network is reporting.

Second-year signal caller Spencer Rattler will now head to the bench after reportedly being informed of the decision this morning by head coach Kellen Moore.

The Saints were just 1-7 with Rattler this season, prompting Moore and his staff to address the quarterback position following Sunday's 23-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

'We're just not executing and playing at a high enough standard, and we've got to find a way to move the football consistently, protect the football and score points,' Moore told reporters Monday.

'And so, this is a pure full offensive evaluation point. ... I think we just got to evaluate this whole thing in the next 48 hours, find the solutions that give us the best chance to win.'

Shough, a 26-year-old who played collegiately at Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville, was taken in the second round of April's NFL Draft.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough is already 26 despite being just a rookie

He came on in relief of Rattler during Sunday's loss, completing 17 of 30 passes for 128 yards. He was also intercepted once and sacked twice.

Rattler is now 1-13 in his brief career as a starter. He completed 15 of 21 passes for 136 yards on Sunday, but committed two costly turnovers: an interception and a lost fumble.

The Saints are one of three one-win teams, although there are another six two-win clubs at the moment.

If New Orleans can't figure out its quarterback situation this season, there are several signal callers expected to go in the first round of April's NFL Draft, including South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers, Oregon's Dante Moore and Indiana's Fernando Mendoza.
