The New York Jets have announced the death of legendary player Nick Mangold at the age of 41.
The iconic center recently revealed that he desperately needed a transplant as he battled chronic kidney disease.
But on Sunday, barely an hour ahead of the Jets' game against the Bengals, the team announced that the 41-year-old had died after complications related to his kidney disease.
'Nick was more than a legendary center,' said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson. 'He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.
'Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.'
Earlier this month, Mangold announced that he needed a new kidney, issuing a public plea to fans to help him find a donor.

'After a rough summer, I'm undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time,' the 41-year-old said.
Mangold said he was looking for a donor with Type O blood and that his family are unable to donate at this time.
'While this has been a tough stretch, I'm staying positive and focused on the path ahead,' he added. 'I'm looking forward to better days and getting back to full strength soon.'
