'The first time a Woltemade effort has been saved'

That is the first time a goalkeeper has saved an effort from Nick Woltemade - six goals from six on target before Donnarumma's one-arm stop to keep out header.

SAVE! Newcastle 0-0 Man City

Barnes finds Hall on the left and his cross is good and has to be headed away.

BIG SAVE AGAIN! Murphy's cross is really good and Woltemade is all over it. He really should score, but Donnarumma gets down really well.

The best shot stopper in the world, for my money, and showing it there.

Lewis Hall then hits the deck but he's trying to buy a penalty.

Newcastle 0-0 Man City

Haaland is forced wide now but wins a corner for his side off Livramento. Cherki will take.

The first one is whipped in and the referee blows for a foul, but it can be retaken. The second is headed out for a third by Joelinton.

The third ends with Cherki shooting from distance but Pope gathers.

CHANCE! Newcastle 0-0 Man City

Really good pressure from Newcastle but they lose it in midfield and Doku plays Haaland. The forward is sprinting in on goal, but Pope has rushed out of his goal too.

The goalkeeper is in no man's land, but Haaland gets it all wrong, shooting up rather than forward, and the ball is recycled.

A chaotic start - both teams should be on the scoresheet!

BIG SAVE! Newcastle 0-0 Man City

WOW! It should be 1-0 to Newcastle within 30 seconds!

Donnarumma gets his ball out all wrong and Foden is clattered by Joelinton. The Brazilian gives the ball to Barnes on the edge of the box, but his first-time effort is tame, and Donnarumma recovers well.

A big let-off for the away side.

KICK-OFF: Newcastle 0-0 Man City

And we're off!

A huge roar from the home fans as referee Sam Barrott blows his whistle for the first time tonight.

It's the visitors who get us underway.

'Howe has tried something new'

When they play Manchester City, Eddie Howe is invariably asked how far Newcastle have to go before they can compete with a club who were the standard-bearers at the time of the Saudi-led takeover in 2021. His answer yesterday was 'a long way'. Let's see how that plays out on the pitch...Howe has tried something new with personnel and he'll be expecting a reaction to recent defeats by Brentford and West Ham. The result is not necessarily everything for Newcastle here, but certainly a much-improved performance is.

Here come the teams!

By Lewis Browning

Right then, here we go.

The players take to the field, led out by Bruno Guimaraes and Bernardo Silva.

It's always some atmosphere at St James' Park. And it's no different today.

Players get warm

By Lewis Browning

And, my word, they need to.

My trusty Apple weather app tells me it's six degrees in Newcastle, but I'm certain it's a lot less. I cannot feel my feet.

Kick off is on the horizon, though!

Richards: 'If fit, Hall goes to the World Cup'

By Lewis Browning

Jamie Redknapp, former Liverpool midfielder, speaking on Sky Sports:

Newcastle have a nice balance at full back but Livramento and Hall and undercooked.

Micah Richards, former Man City midfielder, speaking on Sky Sports:

It's about decision making. If you come in and you are not fresh, it's about making the right decisions. When you get the opportunity, push them back when you can.Livramento, if fit, definitely goes to the World Cup. Hall too - I am excited to see what he does today.

Squawka stat pack

As they always do, our friends at Squawka have provided a very nice stat pack previewing today's game.

City are dominant in terms of the head-to-head, while they ae also well in front in terms of all the attacking numbers.

That is very much tipped by Newcastle's away form, though. Again, they are a different beat at home.

Sagna: 'I've been really impressed by Cherki'

Bacary Sagna, former Manchester City defender, speaking to Oddspedia:

Manchester City look really good this season, and although Newcastle is a tricky place to win at, I think Man City can come away with a victory.I’ve been particularly impressed by Rayan Cherki – I always liked him at Lyon and he’s settled in nicely under Pep Guardiola. He could be the match-winner at St James’ Park.
