TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) claims that customers can still transact safely despite news of a ransomware attack. BRI stated that their customer data remains safe from the cyber threat.

"In connection with the circulating information regarding the BRI data leak, we convey that customers can still use the entire BRI banking system," said BRI Digital and IT Director Arga M Nugraha in a written statement on Wednesday evening, December 18, 2024.

According to Arga, the entire BRI banking system is still operating normally. He claims that BRI transaction services can also be used smoothly.

Arga claims that BRI customers can still use the entire banking service system without worry. He said that BRI service users can transact as usual. "With data security maintained," said Arga.

News of the ransomware attack on BRI emerged from the social media account X or Twitter @FalconFeedsio. "Ransomware warning, Bank Rakyat Indonesia has fallen victim to Bashe Ransomware," said the @FalconFeedsio account in English on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

The upload appeared on X at 18:54 WIB and had been viewed 1.6 million times as of 23:30 WIB.

BRI has not confirmed the truth of the account's upload. Arga as BRI's digital director only said that customer data is still safe and banking transactions can take place as usual.

According to the Ministry of Finance's website, ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware). Ransomware is designed to lock or encrypt data on the victim's device so that it cannot be accessed.

The perpetrator then demands a ransom payment from the victim to get the decryption key or restore access to the data.

Ransomware is often designed to spread across networks and target databases and file servers, so it can quickly paralyze an entire organization.
