Joe Burrow returned to the Cincinnati Bengals sideline on Thursday night but was destroyed by NFL fans on social media for his hairstyle.

The quarterback is currently dealing with a turf toe issue and has not played since suffering the injury when he got sacked by Jacksonville's Arik Armstead in Week 2.

Burrow returned to the Bengals' sideline to support his teammates against the Pittsburgh Steelers but his haircut shocked some fans.

Images showed the quarterback watching the Bengals warm up but his flowing locks were so long that they covered his eyes.

One fan commented: 'Can someone please tell Joe that he's a grown man now, and that haircut no longer works for him.'

Another posted: 'Joe Burrow really gave himself the 13 year old middle school kid haircut.'

A third added: 'Joe Burrow looks so stupid with his haircut. He thinks he is a Hollywood star. Maybe try to be a football player'.

Another believed Burrow looked 'so sad and miserable that he's not playing'.

Wearing a protective boot, a dejected Burrow looked to be feeling the strain of being sidelined.

Instead of playing in the huge AFC North showdown, Burrow will be forced to watch new Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco line up against fellow veteran Aaron Rodgers.

Earlier on Amazon Prime's coverage, NFL insider Ian Rapoport delivered a promising update on Burrow's health.

He reported that Burrow is still on track for a December return and that he hasn't suffered any setbacks in his recovery so far.

Burrow took to Instagram after he suffered a Grade 3 turf toe and delivered a saddening message.

'This game will break your heart. See you soon,' he captioned a series of photos - two of which were in black and white.

It was only two years ago that Burrow missed the final seven games of the 2023 season due to a wrist injury, and his rookie season in 2020 also ended prematurely after he tore his ACL, PCL, MCL and meniscus.

Also on Thursday night, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor made the ruthless decision to bench starting cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt.

In a further blow, the Bengals are also without Trey Hendrickson due to the hip injury he suffered against the Green Bay Packers in Week 6.

Cincinnati come into the game with a 2-4 record after four-straight defeats.

Taylor-Britt was listed as a healthy scratch, despite coming into the NFL season with ambitions of nailing down a place as the Bengals' starting cornerback.

He has started just one of Cincinnati's first five games but has played over 80 per cent of defensive snaps in three of them.
