The Giants are once again in the market for a new head coach - and one insider believes Bill Belichick would jump at the chance to return to New York.

Following their latest fourth quarter collapse - a 24-20 loss to the Bears which brought them to 2-8 on the year - the Giants fired coach Brian Daboll on Monday.

And longtime NFL columnist Gary Myers said afterwards that former New York coordinator Belichick would take the Giants job 'in a second.'

'He loves the Giants,' Myers said on the Valentine's Views podcast. 'I mean he loves the Giants. He gets emotional and melancholy reminiscing about his Giant years. Although that was a long time ago, the Giants have stolen his heart. '

Belichick, 73, was with the Giants from 1979-91, starting as a special teams coach and defensive assistant before serving as the defensive coordinator for a pair of Super Bowl-winning teams.

And it seems that there is still a bond between Belichick and his former organization.

Bill Belichick has deep ties to the New York Giants, and would reportedly be interested in the franchise's new opening

'I do know that [owner] John Mara has a good relationship with Bill,' the former New York Daily News columnist added. 'Whether that means he would hire him, I don't know.'

Myers, who recently authored the book 'Brady vs. Belichick,' brought up several potential roadblocks to Belichick getting the job, including his age and his high-profile relationship with girlfriend Jordon Hudson.

Perhaps more importantly, he wondered aloud if Belichick - who served as the Patriots' de facto general manager during his reign in New England - would be willing to simply coach and work alongside current GM Joe Schoen.

'They have to make the determination, can he co-exist with Schoen if they want to keep Schoen?' Myers asked. 'If not, are they going to give Belichick the personnel power? I think that was his undoing in New England.'

And while Belichick would likely only be a short-term hire due to his age, Myers feels that the Giants could entertain that possibility.

'They might also say looking at all the potential candidates, who gives us the best chance to win, which is what it's all about. And if he only stays three years, but it can get us in a Super Bowl. Is that worth it?'

'That's what I would say about the Giants,' he continued. 'It would be worth it if he gets to a Super Bowl.'

Belichick has led UNC to consecutive conference wins in the last two weeks

Of course, Belichick is currently coaching UNC, where he's had a difficult first year in charge.

The Tar Heels are 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the ACC, though the team has strung together consecutive conference wins against Syracuse and Stanford over the last two weeks.

Still, Belichick could depart the school fairly easily, as he would owe them just a $1million buyout if he chooses to leave (he signed a five-year, $50million deal with the school).

For now at least, the Giants will be led by interim head coach Mike Kafka, who had been the offensive coordinator and is considered a candidate to take over the job permanently.

His first audition will come against the Packers this weekend.
