Channel Nine newsreader Peter Overton delivered a very salty reaction to a group of footy fans who went wild on live television, ahead of tonight's State of Origin III match.

Overton, who had been absent from screens for some time this winter after a period of illness, appeared unenthused by the rowdy group of fans, many of whom were young kids, after they nearly knocked Nine News Sydney reporter James Wilson over.

Wilson was reporting live outside the Accor Stadium ahead of tonight's crunch match, when he was asked by Overton to speak on what the atmosphere was like among the fans.

'Yes some of them beind me right now Pete, the atmosphere is at fever pitch. And why wouldn't it be?' Wilson, who was wearing a New South Wales scarf said.

'Game three decider here in Sydney, it's a fairytale, it's Christmas for rugby league fans.'

It came as Nine reporter James Wilson (centre) was reporting live from outside the Accor Stadium

Several supporters were overheard screaming behind him 'Queenslander!' and 'New South Wales!' as Wilson attempted to deliver his bulletin.

'A very simple concept for the next 80 minutes, we hate them and they hate us. But at the end of that, one team will be going home very happy.

'It's a sell-out here tonight, 82,000 people Pete, and I think I'll let the crowd behind me have the final say on who is going to win...'

He then turned to the fans and said: 'Who do we reckon?'

But Wilson was subsequently mobbed by a barrage of excited fans.

One man, wearing a Queensland shirt appeared to push through the melee and attempted to put a Maroons baseball cap on the presenter, who darted out of shot to avoid making contact with the man.

Despite the excitement of the fans, many of whom were young kids, the Channel Nine presenter Overton looked unimpressed by the mob of pumped-up fans as the broadcast returned to the studio.

'OK,' he began, appearing to force a smile, as a crowd of rowdy youngsters wearing Maroon and Blue shirts appeared to jump up and down on the live footage from outside the Accor Stadium.

'We get the picture... thank you,' he said as he watched the youngsters scream and shout on.

The bulletin then turned to James Bracey from inside the Accor Stadium, with the footy reporter issuing a preview of the match.
