TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A ground aid convoy from North Africa heading to the Gaza Strip will cross over to Libya in an effort to spotlight the Israeli siege crippling the Palestinian enclave, said organizers on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
The convoy, comprising 12 buses and 100 private cars and involving more than 1,000 activists from North African countries, departed from the capital of Tunisia, Tunis, on Monday on its journey to the blockaded Israeli-occupied territories.
“We crossed through several Libyan cities and are now close to Al-Zawiya, 51 km west of Tripoli,” Mohammed Ameen Binnour, a medical coordinator of the convoy, told Anadolu.
Binnour said the aid convoy was greeted by Libyans on the streets and given a formal salute by Libyan security forces.
The Tunisian civil society group behind the convoy said their aim is to demand an immediate "lifting of the unjust siege on the strip." They emphasized that Arab governments have not been forceful enough in pushing to end the 20-month-long Israeli genocidal campaign in Gaza.
The overland convoy has drawn wide attention in Tunisia and Algeria, where it started on Sunday, with people waving Palestinian flags and shouting support for the people of Gaza.
"This convoy speaks directly to our people in Gaza and says, ‘You are not alone. We share your pain and suffering," wrote Yahia Sarri, one of the convoy's organizers from Algeria, on social media.
The convoy arrives a day after Israel intercepted a British-flagged aid ship bound for Gaza, detaining 12 foreign activists aboard.
Israel and Egypt have imposed varying blockades on Gaza since Hamas seized power from the rival Palestinian faction in 2007. Israel claims the blockade is necessary to prevent Hamas from importing weapons, while critics say it amounts to collective punishment of Gaza's residents.
As Israel continues its siege on Gaza's borders to humanitarian aid since early March, international humanitarian aid agencies have warned of the risk of famine among the 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza.
Israel, which has rejected international calls for a ceasefire, has launched brutal offensives against Gaza since October 2023. Israel's genocidal campaign has claimed the lives of nearly 55,000 Palestinian civilians, with a majority being women and children.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
