TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A heartbreaking video of a cat being shot in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage among animal lovers. Police have arrested a 45-year-old man, identified by his initials DD, for shooting his neighbor's pet cat with an air rifle. The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 21, in RW 019, Kelapa Gading Timur.
Kelapa Gading Police Chief Commissioner Handoko Putra revealed that the cat belonged to Margaretha, DD’s neighbor. The cruel act was captured on CCTV in front of his house.
Police confiscated a Canon Super Model 737 air rifle and 56 pellets as evidence. DD has been charged under Article 302 of the Criminal Code for animal abuse, which carries a maximum penalty of nine months in prison, and Article 406 of the Criminal Code for property damage, which could result in a prison sentence of up to 2 years and 8 months.
Handoko said that upon learning of her cat’s death, Margaretha reported the incident to the police on Wednesday, January 22. The video quickly gained traction after being shared by animal rights group @animaldefendersindo, sparking widespread condemnation.
The footage shows the cat walking peacefully in front of DD’s house before he aims with his air rifle from inside his gate. He fires at the cat from a distance of about three meters. The helpless animal writhes in pain before succumbing to its injuries.
Commissioner Handoko confirmed that DD has been interrogated and charged in the case. This tragic incident highlights the need for stronger protection of animals and respect for their lives.
